L.A. Chargers -7 +105 vs. Las Vegas
4:05 PM EST. We're using the alternate point spread here and taking the Chargers -7 at +105. The standard line is -6½ with extra juice, and we don't do that. Rather than laying an inflated price at -6½, we're selling the half-point, moving this to the key number of -7 and taking back plus money. If the Chargers win by exactly seven, we push. Anything more and we cash at a better price.
There are football teams that lose games, and then there are the Chargers, who have spent roughly 40 years turning losing football games into an art form. San Diego, Los Angeles—it doesn't matter what city you put them in. If there is an impossible way to lose a football game, this organization will eventually discover it. Last week they added another chapter, losing outright to Arizona as a 9½-point favorite. For Survivor players, it was a mass funeral. Thousands of people spent months studying schedules, paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars to enter pools, carefully selected the Chargers in Week 1 and by Sunday evening were sitting on the rail wondering why they hadn't just set the money on fire.
And now we're going to spot seven with them. Perfect. Nobody wants the Chargers. Justin Herbert is getting shit on again. Jim Harbaugh is getting shit on. The offensive line is getting shit on. The receivers are getting shit on. Herbert has been surrounded by excuses for years—bad line, no running game, not enough weapons—and eventually people stop listening. He's supposed to be one of the great quarterbacks in football, but every season seems to end with somebody explaining why it wasn't really his fault. Fair or unfair doesn't matter to us. What matters is perception, and right now public confidence in this team could fit comfortably inside a shot glass.
Meanwhile, Las Vegas took care of Miami at home, so the Raiders arrive wearing the exact opposite costume. New season, new optimism, nice opening victory and suddenly they're the attractive dog against the team that just murdered everyone's Survivor ticket. Except we're putting almost no stock into beating Miami. The Dolphins couldn't hit a cow's ass with a shovel last week, and beating them in your own building doesn't suddenly transform Las Vegas into a team we're eager to back when it goes on the road. Look at the pricing instead. Los Angeles was -9½ against Arizona seven days ago. The Chargers lose that game, Las Vegas beats Miami at home, and now we're being offered Los Angeles at -6½ against the Raiders. That's what one Sunday has done to the market.
That's the wager. We're not asking anyone to fall in love with the Chargers. God forbid. Falling in love with the Chargers is how people end up in therapy. We're betting that one horrific Sunday has created an adjustment in perception that is considerably larger than the adjustment in actual ability. Las Vegas gets rewarded for beating a Miami team we're not buying, while Los Angeles gets punished for producing the latest installment of How the Fuck Did the Chargers Lose That One? Fine with us. Everyone who got bounced from Survivor can swear they'll never bet this team again. Everyone else can grab the Raiders and the points. We'll take the most hated team in America this week, sell the half-point and lay seven at plus money. Just keep the defibrillator nearby.
