Dallas -1½ +165 over Vegas
8:05 PM EST. The Dallas Stars are quietly becoming one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL, and their recent surge is backed by analytics that are impossible to ignore. Over the past two months, Dallas has made a massive leap in puck possession, moving from 27th in the league to 10th in offensive zone possession during five-on-five play. That kind of jump doesn’t happen by accident—it reflects a team that is controlling games shift after shift. Dig even deeper and the numbers become more impressive. Since January 1st, a span of roughly 25 games, Dallas ranks first in the entire NHL in expected goals against, and it isn’t particularly close. They sit ahead of defensive powerhouses like Tampa Bay, Carolina, and Colorado. Across nearly every advanced metric, the Stars are ranking inside the top five. Simply put, Dallas is healthy, structured, and playing as well as any team in the league right now.
Vegas, meanwhile, is heading in the opposite direction. The Golden Knights have dropped five of their last six games, and their lone win during that stretch required overtime against Detroit in a game they easily could have lost. Prior to that, Vegas had already endured another slump where they dropped five straight and seven of eight, with their only victory coming against a struggling Toronto team. The recent form paints a clear picture of a team that has lost its rhythm and confidence. Momentum in hockey can be everything, and right now Vegas has none.
What’s most concerning for the Golden Knights is the lack of offense. Over their recent stretch they have struggled just to score two goals in a game, and often against teams that are far from elite defensively. Vegas managed only two against Edmonton when most teams have been lighting the Oilers up for five or more. They scored two against Minnesota, two against Buffalo, were shut out by Pittsburgh, and managed just two against Washington. When a team is consistently stuck in the two-goal range, it becomes extremely difficult to win games, especially against opponents that defend the way Dallas does.
The scheduling spot also favors the Stars. Vegas is in an awkward one-off road game sandwiched between long homestands, making this a classic flat spot where focus can easily slip. Dallas, on the other hand, is building real momentum and flying under the radar while doing it. When you combine Dallas’ elite defensive metrics, their massive improvement in puck possession, and Vegas’ ongoing offensive struggles, the gap between these two teams right now is wider than the odds suggest. With the Stars playing their best hockey of the season and the Golden Knights stuck in neutral, the value lies in backing Dallas on the puck line at -1½ (+165).
