San Jose +165 over Buffalo
7:05 PM EST. The Buffalo Sabres are suddenly the hottest story in hockey. They’ve won seven straight games since the Olympic break and are coming off a chaotic 8–7 win over Tampa Bay that the local media is calling a “statement victory.” The city is buzzing, fans are lining up for autographs, and the Sabres’ stock hasn’t been this high since the days of the French Connection line of Gilbert Perreault, René Robert, and Rick Martin. But while the headlines and standings paint a picture of dominance, the underlying numbers tell a very different story.
This wager is less about the Sharks and more about fading a Buffalo team whose price has become inflated by results that don’t match their actual performance. Since early January, a span of roughly 25 games, the Sabres rank second-last in the NHL in expected goals against, ahead of only the Vancouver Canucks. During that same stretch, Buffalo ranks 28th in puck possession time in the offensive zone at five-on-five, sitting in the same statistical neighborhood as teams like Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Seattle, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In other words, despite the impressive record, it’s a rare night when Buffalo actually controls the play. They are scoring goals, yes, but they are also giving up an alarming number of chances. That’s not dominance—that’s volatility.
San Jose, meanwhile, has been the definition of unpredictable all season, but the Sharks are far more competitive than their record suggests. Prior to their current two-game overtime losing streak—games they easily could have won—they had rattled off three straight victories. The Sharks could very easily be riding a five-game winning streak right now. With their offensive firepower, San Jose is capable of beating anyone on any given night, and they begin a critical five-game road trip after playing six straight at home. Establishing momentum on this trip is crucial, and the Sharks should be fully engaged from the opening faceoff.
Buffalo can absolutely win this game—any NHL team can on any given night—but their performance metrics do not justify being priced like a dominant favorite. The Sabres are benefiting from a massive wave of positive variance, while the market has pushed their price through the roof. When that happens, the value lies on the other side. At +165, we’re more than happy to take a shot with a dangerous San Jose team against an overvalued Sabres squad whose results have far exceeded its actual play.
