That 7-3 loss to the Blackhawks was more than just an off night — it was a reality check. Ottawa fell behind 4-0 before briefly waking up, then packed it in again when things didn’t come easy. That’s not what sharp teams do, and it’s a reminder that this group still has a long way to go in terms of consistency and maturity.

The market is pricing this one as though nothing has changed. Ottawa opened in the -160 range, which implies a massive gap between these two clubs that simply doesn’t exist. The Sens have played a soft early schedule and still haven’t found their defensive identity under Travis Green. Their penalty kill is leaking, their goaltending is middle-of-the-pack, and their blueline remains an adventure every night.

Enter Calgary — a frustrated, desperate hockey team that has been on the wrong end of variance but not effort. The Flames have scored first in seven of eleven games and lost six of them. That’s almost impossible, and it’s the kind of statistical outlier that screams “due.” They’ve been generating chances, finding offense again, and losing because of discipline and the odd untimely mistake — not because they’ve been outplayed.

The Flames’ 4-3 loss in Toronto was the same story: good start, plenty of pushback, zero reward. There’s a team in there fighting for a breakthrough, and the metrics back it up. Calgary’s five-on-five expected goal share is top-half in the league, their shooting percentage is bottom-five. Those things balance over time.
