Winnipeg’s six-game win streak looked nice on paper, but peel it back and you’ll find a team that was outplayed for long stretches, bailed out repeatedly by goaltending and opportunistic finishing. On Thursday, that good fortune dried up. Winnipeg generated plenty of looks against Seattle, but their decision-making in the offensive zone was sloppy, and the moment they trailed, it was panic time. Two empty-netters later, the box score made it look worse than it was — but not by much.

Now, less than 24 hours later, they’re right back at it against a desperate Calgary side that’s due for a correction. The Flames are snakebitten. They’ve played better than their record shows, controlling possession, creating sustained zone time, and generating quality chances that just aren’t falling. The effort has been there — the finish hasn’t. Their shooting percentage is sitting at a laughably low 5.6%, the worst in the league. That won’t last.

We saw signs of life in Montreal. Calgary played a strong, structured road game and held the Habs to virtually nothing at five-on-five before falling 2-1 in overtime. They were better again against Winnipeg earlier this week, carrying the play for long stretches and getting stoned by Connor Hellebuyck. That loss, like most of their early results, came down to bad puck luck, not bad process.

This is a buy-low spot on a Flames team that’s far more competitive than the standings suggest. They’re generating offense, they’re playing tight defensively, and they’re getting better goaltending than they were a week ago. One puck off a stick or skate and the floodgates can open. Calgary to too good to keep losing at this clip and we're sticing with them again here tonight.
