Carolina -1½ +240 over Colorado

Ball Arena – Denver, CO

9:00 PM ET. Regulation only. There’s some nostalgia baked into this one — the old Nordiques vs. Whalers matchup, revived for one night as both clubs wear throwback gear. The Avalanche will dress as Quebec, the Hurricanes as Hartford. It’s a fun storyline for fans, but the betting angle here is that Carolina is live.

The Hurricanes are wrapping up a long road trip and finally showed a crack in Vegas on Monday, dropping their first game of the season after five straight wins. Still, Carolina dominated stretches of that game and were one bounce from forcing overtime. They were missing Shayne Gostisbehere, who’s been excellent early, but this is a team built on system depth. Charles-Alexis Legault filled in on the back end and didn’t look out of place, while Rod Brind’Amour’s group continued to roll four lines with consistency.

Colorado’s results look sharp at first glance, but the underlying play hasn’t matched the record. The Avalanche needed overtime to escape Utah and have been trading high-danger chances at a concerning rate. Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon will always generate offense, yet defensively this group has shown gaps — especially in transition. They’ve been getting by with Scott Wedgewood between the pipes, who’s carried the load while Mackenzie Blackwood recovers from offseason surgery. That well could start to run dry.

Carolina is the deeper, more structured side. They forecheck with pace, own puck possession, and thrive on forcing turnovers — exactly the style that punishes Colorado’s occasional defensive sloppiness. The Avs are still trying to find balance in their bottom six with Joel Kiviranta out and Logan O’Connor not yet ready to return.

Nostalgia aside, this is a brutal matchup for Colorado against a disciplined Carolina side that can match their speed and frustrate their skill players. Carolina’s special teams have been razor sharp, and if they keep out of the box, they’ll control the flow at even strength.

This one might come wrapped in throwback colors, but the better, healthier team wears green and blue tonight and we're going for the kill.
