Carolina -105 over Vegas

10:00 PM ET. OT Included. Vegas at home, on paper, looks like a nightmare matchup for anyone. They’ve scored 26 goals through six games, they’re unbeaten in regulation, and the barn will be rocking on a Monday night with the Pacific leaders hosting the last unbeaten team in the NHL. It all looks shiny and powerful—until you dig one layer deeper.

Vegas is feasting on soft landings. Calgary, San Jose, and Arizona have all wandered into T-Mobile and rolled over. They’ve been outshot in three of six and bailed out by volume, not quality. Now they face a team that doesn’t give away possession, doesn’t panic under pressure, and has no interest in trading chances for the sake of entertainment. Carolina will take Vegas out of its comfort zone, because Carolina always does.

The Hurricanes are four games into a six-game western swing that’s covered more than 5,000 miles, yet you’d never know it from how they’re skating. They’ve outshot every opponent so far, they’ve outchanced every opponent, and they’re winning games on merit. There’s nothing lucky or unsustainable about what’s happening here. They were the better side in Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Jose—and they’re likely to be the better side again tonight.

Seth Jarvis has been the headline, and deservedly so, but Carolina’s machine runs far deeper than that. Rod Brind’Amour’s group just doesn’t take nights off. They roll four lines with purpose, every defenseman can move the puck, and they play a structure that travels. When a team has confidence in its process, the venue doesn’t matter.
