Pittsburgh -½ +119 over Toronto

7:08 PM EST. Regulation only. We faded the Maple Leafs yesterday in Minnesota, thus in the spirit of sticking with it, we’re going to come right back against them today. It’s a little odd that the Maple Leafs didn’t save Matt Murray for this start tonight against his old team in Pittsburgh, but that Toronto chose to play Murray in Minnesota works to our advantage.

This will be Toronto’s third road game in four nights, and so it will send backup Erik Kallgren to patrol the crease. The 26-year-old Swede has played in nine games so far this season, posting just a .891 SV%. Kallgren is 2-2, with his last appearance coming in a loss to the Islanders last Monday night.

More than that however, is the emotional toll of the past week that Toronto has endured. We have no doubt it will serve the Maple Leafs well later on, as this team is taking on an “us against the world” attitude after taking so much heat in the media in October. The Maple Leafs didn’t deserve all the adjectives used to describe them but because wins and losses is all that matters, they took a lot of heat.

Back to the emotional toll of the past few days. Toronto had to deal with the death of Borje Salming after a OT loss to the Islanders. They then played and beat New Jersey, who was on a record breaking run of 13 straight wins. Yesterday, Toronto was on the road in Minnesota and again, played a decent road game but hung on for dear life in a 4-3 win. They won because Murray was on fire while Marc Andre Fleury allowed two goals that 100% of the other goalies in this league would’ve stopped. A Toronto exhale has to be coming and while they figure to jacked up to play the Pens in Pittsburgh, there is a difference between feeling and performing. An emotionally drained Toronto team minus three key d-men should not be that difficult to beat here.
