La Salle +8½ over Penn State (Neutral Site Game)

1:00 PM ET. This number has a stench to it. Fresh manure. On paper, Penn State is the Power Conference side, a Big Ten program with the name recognition and an undefeated 3–0 start. Stack that up next to La Salle and you’d assume this should look like a glorified walkthrough. These teams sit more than 120 spots apart in KenPom’s rankings, and if you lined it up strictly by those metrics, PSU should be laying double the current spread—especially with this being a neutral-site game in Philadelphia

However, that’s the catch. The game is in the city, yes, but it’s being played at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, the Sixers’ home floor, not La Salle’s campus gym. And La Salle already got blown off the court by Temple—another Philly program rated closer to Penn State—in a 27-point wipeout. So why are the Explorers catching such a modest number here?

The answer is straightforward: this is La Salle’s Final Four. They’ll show up for two full halves with the energy and desperation that comes with facing a regional heavyweight. Penn State, on the other hand, is ripe to get caught napping. The Nittany Lions handled Navy easily—a team cut from a similar cloth as La Salle—and there is a real chance they look past the Explorers entirely.

The line is waving a red flag. It’s telling us not to trust what the name on the jersey or the early record suggests. It’s telling us to take the points. We’re playing the number, not the brands.
