4:10 PM EST. Joey Cantillo (LHP - Cleveland Guardians) enters this matchup with a 4.57 ERA, and at first glance that number pales in comparison to the ace on the opposing side. However, baseball betting is rarely as simple as comparing ERAs. Cantillo has shown flashes of being far more effective than his season-long numbers indicate, particularly when he's able to establish his fastball early and work ahead in counts. As a left-hander facing a Detroit lineup that can occasionally become overly aggressive, he has an opportunity to keep the game close and hand it over to a Cleveland bullpen that has consistently been one of the organization's strengths. For underdog bettors, the objective isn't finding the better pitcher every time—it's finding a price that overstates the difference between the two teams.

Tarik Skubal (LHP - Detroit Tigers) deserves every bit of his reputation. The left-hander carries a stellar 2.72 ERA and remains one of the most dominant starters in baseball. His combination of strikeouts, command and efficiency makes him a difficult assignment for any lineup. That  being said, the betting market is fully aware of Skubal's talent and prices him accordingly. The question isn't whether Skubal is the better pitcher; it's whether one starting pitcher should make a road team this large of a favorite against a division rival. Even elite starters only influence a fraction of the game, and once they exit, the remaining innings are determined by bullpens, defense and offensive execution.

Baseball has evolved into a roster game more than ever before. Starters rarely throw complete games, bullpens are heavily involved and one swing can erase six dominant innings. Detroit may own the edge on the mound, but the Guardians still possess home-field advantage, a competitive lineup and a relief corps capable of shortening the game. More importantly, the market appears to be pricing Detroit almost entirely off Skubal's presence. When one player drives a moneyline this aggressively, value often emerges on the other side. Cleveland doesn't need Cantillo to out pitch Skubal over nine innings; they simply need to keep the game within reach long enough for the rest of the roster to make an impact.
