The right-hander doesn't overpower hitters, but he consistently keeps his team in games by limiting damage, throwing strikes and avoiding the big inning. Vásquez has developed into a reliable innings-eater for a Padres club that has received quality starting pitching throughout much of the season. The value in this matchup lies with San Diego as a road underdog. The Padres possess the more balanced roster, a deeper lineup and a bullpen capable of shortening games once they gain a lead. Baltimore's home-field advantage is already reflected in the price, but the starting pitching matchup is much closer than the market suggests. With Vásquez carrying the better ERA and displaying greater consistency this season, San Diego has every opportunity to control this game from the mound. When a team with playoff-caliber talent is being offered at plus money behind the more reliable current starter, that's the side worth backing. The Padres are a live road dog with a legitimate chance to leave Baltimore with a victory.
