9:38 PM EST. Drew Smyly (LHP - CHC) posts a 5-3 record while sporting a 3.56 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP across 12 starts this season. Smyly is very much "what you see is what you get," which is why he will usually get a longer look from us when he is an underdog, as he is tonight in Anaheim. Smyly is not a sexy starter, but he just keeps plugging away. Smyly's last turn was called "pedestrian" by a respectable baseball media outlet, but the dude was just one out away from a quality start.

The real target of this play is Reid Detmers (LHP - LAA), who will make his 11th start of 2023. Detmers is 0-5 this season, posting an inflated ERA of 5.15, and while his xERA is a notch lower, it's still near 4.50 (4.48). In his 50.2 innings this season, Detmers WHIP is 1.54. Furthermore, the 23-year-old has an ugly 5.47 ERA over his last five starts. As a pooch, perhaps Detmers might be worth a look, but as an overpriced favorite against a team that hits lefties well (the Cubs rank 25th in Ks, 8th in average, 10th in OBP, and 8th in slugging), he must be faded.
