Chicago +150 over Minnesota

2:10 PM EST. Joe Ryan (RHP - MIN) is on his way to a breakout. He has a 2.45 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 44 innings. While a 25% hit rate has certainly helped, so did his elite skills. His pinpoint control was validated by a nifty 72% first-pitch strike rate and 29% Ball% but this is not a fade on Joe Ryan. This is a wager on the Cubbies to keep it rolling. Besides that, Ryan is very good but he’s not THIS good.

Hayden Wesneski (RHP - CHC) made his big league debut last season after coming over to the Cubs in the Scott Effross trade with the Yankees. He pitched well, striking out a batter an inning and posting a 1.11 WHIP in 33 MLB innings. This past spring was more of the same for Wesneski and so was the first six weeks of the season. His sample size of consistency is getting larger and he’ll now make his eighth start of the year with some very decent skills.

Wesneski has a handle on grip manipulation, sequencing and tunneling. He throws three variations of his fastball. The workhorse is a low spin-rate, 93-95 mph four seam fastball. He commands it well and gains added effectiveness due to the tunneling of the 4-seamer off of his 2-seamer and cutter. The low-90s 2- seamer is a true sinker with plus arm-side running action. Wesneski’s cutter is a high-80s offering with true cut, late in the progression. His best overall pitch is a 79-82 mph sweeper with 18 inches of horizontal sweep. He’s proven to be difficult to hit while the Cubbies have proven to be a very difficult out. Man, are the Cubs ever having fun out there. Loose as hell, Chicago is very worthy of a bet here at this outrageous price.
