Calgary +180 over Carolina
8:00 PM EST. On paper this is the most lopsided matchup on the board — 7-1-1 Carolina, winners of seven straight, against 1-6 Calgary — and the price says so too. So let us tell you why we are taking the home dog anyway, because this is a textbook double spot from the situational list. Carolina won 3-2 in Winnipeg last night, which means tonight is the tail end of a back-to-back, and it is also the Hurricanes' ninth straight game in a different city: Washington at home, Philadelphia, Montreal, Vancouver at home, Chicago, Philadelphia again, Washington again, Winnipeg, and now Calgary. They have not played two games in the same building all season, and the bill for that kind of living comes due on nights exactly like this one. Calgary, meanwhile, has not played since Thursday.
Carolina is also going to its backup tonight. Pyotr Kochetkov has been brilliant (5-0-0, 1.78 goals against), but the expected starter is Brandon Bussi and his .871 save percentage, because that is what the second half of a back-to-back gets you. And here is the part the 1-6 record hides: Calgary's 5-on-5 process is genuinely good — a 54.26 Corsi share and a 55.07 expected-goals share, top-ten caliber numbers. What has destroyed the Flames is finishing (nine goals at 5-on-5, dead last output) and goaltending, with Dustin Wolf at .834. Teams that out-chance opponents this consistently do not stay 1-6 forever, and a desperate, rested home team catching an elite opponent on tired legs with its backup in net is precisely where the correction tends to start.
The risks are obvious and we will state them plainly: Wolf has been awful, Calgary is 0-3 at home, they have been outscored 35-14, and Carolina's own 5-on-5 profile (62.71 expected goals, 59.94 Corsi) is the best in hockey — this is a great team, full stop. If both teams were rested we would not be within a mile of this ticket. They are not. We are being offered +180 on a rested home team with real underlying numbers against a club playing its ninth straight game in a ninth different city, on a back-to-back, with its backup goalie. That price is paying us to take the situation, so we will.
