Carolina -1½ +110 over Montreal

Carolina leads series 3-1

8:00 PM EST. There comes a point in every playoff series when one team realizes it simply doesn't have an answer. Montreal may have reached that point.

The Canadiens return to Raleigh facing elimination after getting completely shut down in Game 4. They managed just a handful of quality looks in a 4-0 loss and now must win three straight against a team that has dictated virtually every aspect of this series. That's a tall order against any opponent. Against Carolina, it borders on impossible.

The biggest problem for Montreal is that there isn't an obvious adjustment to make. The Canadiens aren't losing because of bad luck or a few unfortunate bounces. They're losing because Carolina is spending most of every game in the offensive zone. The Hurricanes have established a relentless forecheck, controlled possession, and forced Montreal into long stretches of defending. When a team is constantly retrieving pucks and trying to survive shifts, it's only a matter of time before mistakes follow.

Carolina's identity has remained unchanged for years. They don't sit back. They don't wait for power plays. They don't rely on one scoring line to carry them. The Hurricanes come in waves and force opponents to defend for extended periods. Over a seven-game series, that's an exhausting style to play against, and Montreal is feeling the effects of it now.

The pressure is entirely on the Canadiens tonight. They know another loss ends their season. That urgency sounds positive in theory, but it often leads to pressing, forcing plays and taking chances that aren't there. If Montreal falls behind early, they'll have little choice but to open things up, which plays directly into Carolina's hands.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes return home with a chance to finish the job in front of their own crowd. This building has been one of the toughest road environments in the league for years, and Carolina has consistently elevated its game here during the postseason. The energy should be high from the opening puck drop.

The puck-line appeal is obvious. If Carolina leads late by a goal, Montreal will have no choice but to pull the goalie. If Carolina scores first and forces the Canadiens to chase the game, the likelihood of a multi-goal result increases significantly. The Hurricanes have been the better team throughout this series and now have home ice, momentum and a chance to close the door.

Montreal deserves credit for getting this far, but this matchup has exposed the gap between these teams. Carolina has controlled the pace, controlled possession and controlled the series.

Now they finish it.
