Montreal +115 over Detroit
Little Caesars Arena – Detroit, MI
7:00 PM ET. OT included. The Red Wings are being priced here like they’ve already ended the longest playoff drought in the league, but nothing has changed until it actually changes. Every October, Detroit shows up with fresh optimism, a few shiny new faces, and a headline about turning the corner. Then they start playing hockey and we remember why they’ve been on the outside looking in since 2016.
The market is buying Detroit’s preseason story again — new coach Todd McLellan, a few energetic kids, and a “true” No. 1 goaltender in John Gibson. On paper, it sounds great. In practice, it’s a hard sell. Gibson hasn’t had a save percentage above .905 in five years, and his last season in Anaheim was more meltdown than renaissance. He’s a name, not a solution. The Red Wings’ core — Larkin, DeBrincat, Raymond, Seider — is talented but wildly inconsistent. They don’t handle adversity well and rarely sustain pressure five-on-five.
Meanwhile, the Habs are being undervalued because they lost 5–2 in Toronto on opening night, but that final is a lie. Montreal carried play for long stretches, led in shots, and were tied late before giving up a deflection goal followed by two empty-netters. That’s not a bad hockey team — that’s a young one learning how to close. They skated with one of the East’s most talented rosters and looked the part of a club ready to take a step forward.
The Wings are still an average team with a new coat of paint. Montreal is live, has a game under its belt, and offers up tremendous value here as the pooch.
