Dallas -3½ over Las Vegas
8:15 PM ET. The market is giving the Raiders credit for “being competitive,” but competitive losers are still losers, and there’s a world of difference between being close and being good. Las Vegas keeps getting priced like a hard-luck team on the verge of turning the corner when, in reality, they’re a 2-7 outfit that has mastered the art of inventing new ways to lose football games. Four blown opportunities, three blown leads, blocked kicks, missed kicks, overtime failures — pick your poison. Pete Carroll inherited chaos, but the results are the same: this team cannot close.
Dallas is the exact opposite. They’re volatile, dysfunctional at times, and dealing with the emotional fallout of a tragedy, but the highs are extremely high. The Cowboys’ wins aren’t squeakers — they are detonations. They’re averaging 40.3 points per game in victories and would be 4-4 if not for their 40-40 track meet with Green Bay. When this team gets rolling, it’s a downhill freight train, and the Raiders don’t have the artillery to slow it.
Las Vegas’ defense has played hard, but effort only gets you so far when your offense is generating single-digits. They scored seven points last week, and that required Denver repeatedly inviting them back into the game. Now they step up in class against a Cowboys defense that creates pressure, forces mistakes, and gets to play with a lead far more often than Las Vegas wants to admit. Geno Smith gets the start again, which is fine if the goal is to hand the ball off and hope for the best, but this offense is out of answers, down to spare parts, and banking on moral victories. Good luck trading punches with Dak Prescott while your QB is averaging checkdowns and punts.
Dallas will feel the emotions of the Kneeland tragedy, but that cuts both ways. Teams in crisis often show up laser-focused the next time out, and Schottenheimer hinted at exactly that. Football becomes the escape — and Dallas has the horses to turn that emotion into a surge.
