7:30 PM ET. We are going to continue our assault on the Thundering Herd because we are not sure they should be the road chalk in this situation. Last time out, we faded Marshall when they were a popular three-point home dog to visiting Texas State. The Herd somehow managed to win in overtime despite trailing late, but had the Cats not done what they have done all season long and found ways to lose, the Herd should have lost and not covered. The point is Marshall wasn’t supposed to win that game.

Preceding this, the Herd were in a spot advantageous for them to cover when they were a 14-point dog against hot-handed Old Dominion who was a covering machine up until that point. The Herd not only came in under the number, but they won outright and convincingly at that.

Now, Marshall is a road favorite for the fourth time this year against a FBS opponent — and their third stint as the chalk on the road. How have they fared thus far? Lost outright as a seven-point choice against Missouri State in September, won by 14 at Middle Tennessee State (not saying much) later that month, and lost outright as a two-point favorite at UL Lafayette the week thereafter. Like we said, we are not sure they should be laying points. This is not a profile built for consistency in inhospitable environments, especially the “Surf Turf”. If Marshall lost like they were supposed to in Huntington against Texas State, they might not be laying anything here or this number is inside a field goal at worst.

The Chants, meanwhile, are quietly putting together a 4-3 season. They’ve up-ended South Alabama, UL Monroe, and Appalachian State — all as an underdog in those tilts. The market has not caught up to the Chanticleers yet, but it may very well have clued in on the Herd. This is where it all comes full circle. Coastal outright.
