OKLAHOMA -5 over Ole Miss

Gaylord Oklahoma Memorial Stadium – Norman, OK

12:00 PM ET. There’s a lot to unpack here, but the focus should remain on Ole Miss — a team that is once again a market darling this week. For much of last week’s game against Georgia in Athens, the Rebels weren’t just competitive — they were in position to win outright. Ole Miss led by nine going into the fourth quarter before Georgia surged late, scoring in the final minutes to take an eight-point lead and secure the victory. The Rebels, catching seven points, looked like the “right side” for 55 minutes, and the market has forgiven them entirely for the loss, despite the fact ripping a ticket in such a fashion normally results in overreaction the other way. However, this week, bettors are ready to double down on the Rebels — they were close to a big upset against the #8 team in the country last week, and close is often good enough for market sentiment.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma finds itself in a different spot. The Sooners’ stock remains low after that ugly showing two weeks ago against a then unranked Texas in the Red River rivalry. OU was beaten soundly and have yet to shake off the residue from that defeat in the eyes of the betting market, even if last week they responded in droves. The Sooners losing by 17 to an unranked Texas at a neutral site is a bad look for a top-five side. Losing to a top-ten side like Georgia in Athens in a hard-fought contest is considered an honor, there is a difference and the market is reacting according to said difference.

Ole Miss has also been heavily propped up by media chatter as well. Analysts continue to call them a playoff-calibre team, suggesting that even with another loss they’ll remain in the conversation. Every game from here on out for the Rebels has been described as “manageable.” That kind of talk inflates stock — and the market always adjusts to that optimism.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, has been criticized for its schedule. Wins over Temple, Kent State, Illinois State, and even a controversial squeaker over Auburn don’t inspire confidence. Thrashing South Carolina in the Willy B last week barely moved the needle, as the Gamecocks have been one of the nation’s biggest disappointments.

All of this creates a perfect storm — one team being undervalued when it’s actually overpriced, and another being quietly disrespected. The Sooners at the end of the day are the side the oddsmakers trust. Not, the Lane Train and friends. This is the definition of a sell-high spot on Mississippi. Take it.
