Wyoming +14 over Texas Tech

Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium – Laramie, WY

Streaming: CBS

7:30 PM EST. 2022 was a big year for Texas Tech football. The Red Raiders crossed the eight-win threshold for the first time in nine years and capped off their efforts with a smothering of Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl where first year head coach Joey McGuire handed one of college ball’s most animated personalities Lane Kiffin a 42-25 beatdown. At one point in 2022, Ole Miss were 7-0 and ranked as high as #7 in the polls before a loss to LSU derailed the Rebels season, which saw them only win one more game to finish 8-5 when it was all said and done. Point is, Tech’s big bowl win wasn’t all that impressive.

Incidentally, Texas Tech also beat Texas and Oklahoma in the same season for the first time ever in school history in 2022 and they’ll return 17 starters, including all 11 on offense led by QB Tyler Shough, RB Brooks, and their top five wide receivers so Tech’s stock is soaring to kick off the year. However, it’s also worth noting that Texas Tech's defense lost five of its top six tacklers from last year but the market/media’s focus is almost always on offense.

This game has featured some tug-of-war over the summer, with the betting public grabbing Texas Tech at anything around 13½ and 14. Every time there's a Wyoming home game on the schedule, we can go through the same mental routine: Craig Bohl is a fantastic coach. Wyoming is a tough place to play but do they have enough talent? We do not know if they do but we’ll focus on things we do know. First, the Cowboys enter ‘23 in much better shape than last year. Furthermore, coach Bohl is no stranger to playing premium opponents and he returns nine starters from a widely-regarded stout defense. Should Wyoming lean on the run as it likes to and find success (they averaged 181 yards per game on the ground in 2022), one could argue that the ‘Boys can keep the Wreck Em’s offense off the field and play good enough defense to keep this within range but we are not here to break down X’s and O’s.

The bottom line is that Texas Tech is regarded as a dark horse for the Big 12 and some publications have even gone on to say that this Tech team could be playing in a New Year’s Six bowl game. The market eats up these kind of narratives at the beginning of the year, which provides us opportunities to grab inflated points.

Watch any college preview show before the season begins to get an idea of who the media is pimping. In that regard, the Red Raiders are being pitched around like they are the newest flavor of Prime Energy Drink. When the market and media is buying, we’re almost always selling and that’s precisely the situation here.
