Texas Tech -3½ over Kansas
Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock, TX
7:00 PM EST. The Jayhawks' work here is done. Kansas, long dregs in the Big 12 are headed to a bowl game after waffling Oklahoma State last Saturday, 37-16. It was an emphatic victory and it was one that took Kansas to a very market-friendly 7-1-1 against the spread. It can’t be understated how successful a season the Jayhawks have had. After securing a Bowl game last week for the first time since 2008, the Jayhawks celebrated well into the night. This is a program that has been to a mere 9 Bowl games in their illustrious history. Their record in Bowl Games is 0-9 so this is the week that Kansas can exhale while waiting to see who they’ll be playing. It’s one of the biggest letdown spots of the year.
Texas Tech is struggling this season at just 4-5, but a closer look shows they’ve played some tough competition this season. Non-conference games with Houston and NC State were dangerous choices and ones that many Power 5 coaches would not make. It cost Tech, as they got snipped by the Wolfpak in its third game of the season. Losses to Kansas State, Okie State, Baylor and TCU would follow, but there is little shame in struggling in the meat grinder that is the Big 12.
We often write that the line dictates the play, and this game is no different. When you see a number like -3½, be mindful that the oddsmakers may be enticing you to back the underdog. Be especially aware when you see a game like this where one side looks to be way up and the other, way down. When the books hang the hook on a key number like 3, 7 or 10, when a 3, 7 or 10 would do, it’s a big red flag. Play it accordingly.
