Jacksonville St. +5½ -110 over South Alabama

8:00 PM EST. This line is priced off last year's yearbook photos, and both of these rosters have been fed through a shredder since then. South Alabama went 21-12 last season and now has to replace all five starters; the Sun Belt's own preseason poll looked at what's left and slotted the Jaguars 11th. Monday night showed you why: they lost at home, in this same building, 86-77 to Ohio, shooting 27% from three, 61% from the free-throw line, and grabbing a grand total of 27 rebounds as a team. Richie Riley is a good coach in his ninth year, but right now he's coaching introductions, not a rotation — the scoring is coming from lower-division transfers like Jalen Langsy (25 in the opener) and Aaron Goldstein, still learning to play together in game two of their lives. Laying 5 1⁄2 with that outfit, in a November game between two strangers, is a price built on a reputation the current roster hasn't earned.

Jacksonville State has its own rebuild, 14 newcomers, if you're counting, and Ray Harper is  but Harper in year 11 with 600 career wins builds the same thing every year. A defense that travels. The Gamecocks allowed just 68.4 points a game last season, and this version has genuine length to protect the rim, with a pair of 7-footers in Iaroslav Niagu and Daniel Tobiloba behind a frontcourt that goes 6'8", 6'10", 6'8". They forced 26 turnovers in their opener, Chris Lockett Jr. handed out 10 assists, and the scoring came from everywhere, Jordan Stiemke 17, Alijah Curry 16, Naas Cunningham 14, six players in double figures in all. That balance matters in a game like this: there's no single head for South Alabama's zone to cut off, and Jacksonville State's size goes straight at the thing that just failed the Jaguars, Ohio pushed them around on the glass and in the paint, and the Gamecocks are bigger than Ohio. 5½ is two full possessions in a game between two rebuilt rosters still figuring out who they are, and the dog has the defense, the size, and the deeper bench of scorers. This has the smell of a one-possession game either way.
