Rhode Island +10½ over Kansas State

Cayman Island Classic

John Gray Gymnasium - George Town, Cayman Islands

7:30 PM EST. Rhode Island is now led by Archie Miller, who takes over for the fired David Cox. Cox was let go after a disappointing 5-12 run in the A-10 last season. Miller is saying all the right things in his return to the conference, where he coached Dayton to four NCAA appearances in six years before jetting for that B1G money at Indiana. Miller was canned at the end of the 2020-21 season, and sat out last year before making the call to come to Rhode Island saying, “(rarely) do you get a sabbatical, real time to evaluate what you believe and don’t. It was a unique opportunity to take over (at URI) after the fact. I have a new outlook and perspective, and a better feel.”

Miller worked the transfer portal bringing in four notable recruits, but only two are playing at the moment, so we’ll focus on them. The first is Alex Tchikou out of Alabama, He was ranked as the #65 player in the nation just a year ago, but he’s never seen the court at this level until now, as injuries have sidelined the start to his college career, next is Brandon Weston, who was at Seton Hall last season, also made a move to the Rams after being redshirted. He’s a former top-100 recruit and is chomping at the bit to make some noise in the A-10.

The new coach also liked what he saw on the Rams roster and he’s leaning heaving into three returning recruits at the moment, with Malik Martin, Ishmael Leggett, and Sebastian Thomas all contributing early.

The Rams are just 1-2 this season, but more importantly to us, they are 0-3 at the pay window. URI lost outright as the chalk to Quinnipiac (9½) and Texas State (7½), and the Rams failed to cover as an 11½-point favorite in a 74-64 win versus Stony Brook at home last Tuesday night. While the Rams failed to cash in that game, Leggett, Thomas and Martin all scored in double-digits, as did Louis Hutchinson. With a goose egg on the board in their ATS record, the market sees a wounded animal and it has pounced on the Wildcats of Kansas State.

This line opened with the Rams as an 8½-point pooch, but the market saw the 3-0 Wildcats and took a stand. Records can be deceiving this early in the season. Kansas State fits that mold, playing just the 341st ranked strength of schedule according to KenPom We’re not going to spend much time on the Wildcats here, as this play is about backing the undervalued Rams who now go from being favored in three straight games to being the inflated price you see now. We’re talking the points, but would not be surprised if the Rams sent the Wildcats packing from the Caymans on night one.
