Detroit -4½ -110 over L.A. Lakers

6:00 PM EST. This spread is a medical report wearing a costume. Detroit is laying 4.5 at home against an 8-2 Lakers team that has won four straight, and the only way that number makes sense is the one the market is clearly pricing: Luka Doncic is questionable with back tightness, and even his availability comes with an asterisk. The Lakers have been a one man economy lately, with Doncic averaging 43.4 points over his last five games, including 53 on Portland and 45 on Toronto. Detroit, rested for three full days, owns the antidote profile. The best defense in basketball at 103 points allowed per 100 possessions, the fewest points conceded in the league, and a net rating of +9.4 that actually edges the Lakers' +7.8. The visitors are also walking into the first night of a back to back, with Atlanta waiting tomorrow, after riding their stars hard on Friday.

The machinery favours the home team even in the version where Doncic dresses. Cade Cunningham (22.6 points, 7.4 assists a night) runs one of the league's most deliberate offences, 20th in pace, which means the Lakers have to guard for 22 seconds a trip instead of running off misses. Ausar Thompson is close to the exact defender you would build in a lab for this assignment, long, physical and allergic to screens, whether the ball is in Doncic's hands or Austin Reaves's. And a bad back is not a rumour you shake off against the most physical defence in the NBA: if Doncic plays compromised, Detroit's scheme of showing bodies and shrinking the floor turns him into a passer. If he sits, the Lakers' offence is Reaves, a finger taped Walker Kessler and hope, against a defence that strangles hope professionally.

Weigh it all and the situation keeps winning the argument: the league's best defence, three days of rest, home court, and an opponent whose engine is either in street clothes or carrying a sore back into a two in two nights stretch with a plane ride attached. This version of Los Angeles that shows up tonight is shorthanded, compromised, or both.
