Walbert Ureña (RHP - LAA) has quietly put together an impressive campaign, posting a 2.44 ERA through 55.1 innings while allowing just 0.65 home runs per nine innings. The hard-throwing right-hander averages 97.7 mph on his fastball, generates a healthy 50.3% ground-ball rate, and has limited opponents to a .259 BABIP. While his 4.01 FIP and 4.43 xFIP indicate some regression risk, Ureña's ability to keep the ball in the yard and induce weak contact gives him a strong foundation against an Arizona lineup that has been vulnerable to power arms.

Ryne Nelson (RHP - ARI) has been far less trustworthy. Through 76.1 innings, Nelson owns a 5.19 ERA, 5.53 FIP, and 5.03 xFIP, numbers that suggest his struggles are no fluke. His strikeout rate sits at a modest 6.72 K/9, well below league average, while a concerning 2.00 HR/9 has been his biggest downfall. Nelson's 31.4% ground-ball rate is among the weakest you'll find from a starting pitcher, creating plenty of opportunities for opponents to elevate and do damage. Despite a favorable .243 BABIP, he has still been unable to prevent runs consistently, and his 63.3% strand rate reflects a pitcher who struggles to escape trouble once runners reach base.

This matchup comes down to trust, and there is very little reason to trust Nelson at his current level of performance. Ureña has shown better command of contact, a superior ability to suppress home runs, and significantly stronger run prevention metrics. Arizona may own the home-field advantage, but the Diamondbacks are sending the weaker starter to the mound by a considerable margin. When the underdog features the pitcher with the better ERA, better ground-ball profile, better power prevention, and considerably more upside, grabbing a price with the Angels becomes an easy decision.
