7:10 PM ET. The market has doubled down on the Padres after the Mets cashed yesterday, moving this number to a pick’em. That’s a reaction to Nick Pivetta’s shiny 13-5, 2.73 ERA line, and a dismissal of David Peterson’s “ordinary” 3.77 ERA. It’s also wrong.

Variance has carried Pivetta (.233 BABIP), while Peterson has been burned by it (.313 BABIP). Strip that away and their FIPs both sit at 3.33. Now factor in Peterson’s 55% groundball rate versus Pivetta’s flyball-heavy 33%, and suddenly Citi Field looks like a minefield for Pivetta.

This is all about contact quality and environment. Pivetta’s profile plays right into New York’s launch angles, while Peterson has the arsenal to smother San Diego with grounders. The market is handing us the Mets at a discount, and we’re stepping in. Mets again.
