6:10 PM EST. Jack Flaherty (RHP - DET) has yet to post a win this season, but that is not because of a lack of quality in his efforts. In fact, it’s quite the contrary, as Flaherty has been dominant, posting 50 Ks in 30 IP with just 5 BB. Flaherty’s xERA is 3.07, his WHIP is a solid 1.03, his strikeout rate is at a career high, as is his swing and miss rate, which is an elite 16.4%. In his last start versus the Cardinals last Tuesday, Flaherty generated an impressive 24 swinging strikes across his 93 pitches, and he now sits second in all of the bigs in Ks behind only Tyler Glasnow. Flaherty signed a 1-year $14M deal with the Tigers in the offseason and if he keeps this up, someone is going to back up the Brinks truck for him.

Perhaps Triston McKenzie (RHP - CLE) has turned a corner from his early season struggles and that the reported ligament damage in his right elbow is not bothering him, but in this spot, with a top-of-the-line, front-end starter facing off against him, now would be the time to sell after McKenzie has posted just 5 ER total over his last three starts (16 IP), which included the two runs he allowed on five hits over seven innings versus the Astros last Wednesday. While the strikeouts were there (six), McKenzie found himself working from behind in many cases in that game, posting a weak first-pitch strike rate of just 46.2%. In that versus Justin Verlander and the Astros in Houston, McKenzie was a +150 underdog and now he is a -115 favorite here. That is a significant shift from one game to the next and the juice just might not be worth the squeeze tonight. We’ll also note that the oddmsakers do not figure McKenzie has much of shot compared to Flaherty to pick up the win in this game, as he is +290 to record the W, while Flaherty is a very low at just +135.
