Cleveland +121 over Minnesota

7:40 PM EST. Pablo López (RHP - MIN) is a true quality pitcher that has been better than his 4.11 ERA would suggest. His underlying skills have been some of the best in the AL among starters with a 4.00+ ERA: 30% K%, 6% BB%, 24% K-BB%, 42% grounders. We’ll stash away Lopez when he’s being offered a price but today he’s favored by a significant amount of a pitcher that is at the very worst his equal and probably superior to him. It’s also worth noting that the Guardians’ bats are coming around.

Tanner Bibee (RHP - CLE) just keeps getting better. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Cal State Fullerton, Tanner Bibee was put on the shelf for the 2021 season and made his minor league debut during the 2022 season. He absolutely dominated High-A and Double-A with a 2.65 ERA, an 11.3 K/9, and a minuscule 1.3 BB/9 in 132.2 innings, although his breakout season was a bit overshadowed by the presence of 2022 first-round pick Gavin Williams. His arsenal has taken an exponential leap forward since joining the Guardians organization. Only throwing between 88-92 in college, his fastball now sits between 95-97 and tops out at 99 on the gun. The improvements came from tweaks to Bibee’s delivery, mostly related to his stride and how he finishes after winding up. It added velocity to his fastball and slider. He also worked on giving his slider a more distinct shape from his curveball. His development path and player profile have some similarities to that of fellow Guardian Shane Bieber, another starter from SoCal with a microscopic walk rate and viable secondaries who had his fastball gain a couple of ticks during his brief time in the minors.

The most prominent tool in Bibee’s profile is his command, only having one career MiLB game with more than two walks issued in 28 career starts. His pitchability and creativity indicate an understanding of sequencing and placement. He can throw all of his pitches in any count to all quadrants of the zone, nor is he afraid to do so. A unique wrinkle in his profile is his ability to be effective whether working north-south or east-west with his stuff, and he can even mix it up in all four quadrants during a plate appearance. Bibee has no issues pitching backward and changing patterns when facing opponents for a second or third time. In his last start, Bibee struck out nine in six frames. He has registered a 1.83 ERA, 2.44 xERA, 0.81 WHIP over his last three starts. This kid is the real deal and his confidence keeps getting stronger too. When Tanner Bibee is being offered a price, it would be smart to accept it.
