Pittsburgh +112 over Detroit

6:40 PM EST. Michael Lorenzen (RHP - DET) and the Tigers have little to do with this play, but they are fine fodder as an overpriced favorite in a situation that we love. Before we get there, Lorenzen has made five starts this season, going 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA that is backed up nearly identically by his 4.20 xERA. What you see is what you get here; dude is mediocre, but he’s priced like he’s Dizzy Trout in his prime.

Luis L. Ortiz (RHP - PIT) is the reason we are here. He has made one ugly 5.0-inning start, but that is not going to deter us from backing him here as an underdog. Ortiz has an "electric" arm and he profiles as a pitcher who is able to induce groundballs at an elite level. He has shown that he can miss bats at the big league level, while also showing he can miss bats with 17 strikeouts across his 16 innings pitched in four starts for the Pirates in 2022. Ortiz also posted a 13.1% swing and miss rate and a 63.8% first-strike rate in those MLB outings. For good measure, Ortiz put up a tidy 2.96 xERA last season. Ortiz has shown he can do it at this level, which makes this a tremendous buy-low opportunity.
