Chicago -1½ +105 over Washington

8:05 PM EST. We’re always aware of “zig-zagging” and seldom do so but this one is highly warranted. For one, the Nats bullpen is a mess after the pitching staff gave up 30 runs over the past three games and 51 runs over the past six. What that creates is the manager leaving the starter in longer than he normally would. Not that this starter should matter. Paolo Espino (RHP - WAS) is a well-traveled swingman that has posted a 5.63 xERA after 30 games this year with 10 of those being starts. He has good control with just 13 walks issued in 71 frames but apart from that BB%, his poor swing and miss rate of 5.6% combined with his soft-tossing velocity, means nothing else good stands out. Deception is not even in huis skill set so it’s time fade.

Marcus Stroman (RHP - CHC) owns a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP since returning from the IL (shoulder) on July 9. Over that stretch, Stroman has induced a lot more grounders (53%) while pounding the strike zone with first-pitch strikes. Over his five-game surge, Stroman has faced all first-division offensive clubs. Today, he draws a Nationals foe which has gone 7-26 with a .664 OPS since June 29. Yeah, the Cubs might win by two or more.
