Pittsburgh +128 over Philadelphia

6:40 PM EST. Ranger Suarez (LHP - PHI) will take his third turn of the season for a Phillies team that cannot hit its way out of a wet paper bag at the moment, as they are hitting just .234 as a squad through and they have posted five or more runs just once over their first dozen games. Truth be told, Suarez is a pitcher that we wouldn’t mind backing in the right situation as an underdog, but that is not the situation we find him in today.

While the sample size is small (134 ABs), Suarez draws a potentially tough matchup here against the Pirates side that is hitting .284 versus lefties, which is the fifth-best mark in all of baseball and that is tops in the bigs with a .395 On Base Percentage. Furthermore, the Pirates are off to a 9-3 start, and can’t wait to get to the ballpark, meanwhile, the Phillies are already taking a ton of heat from the locals because they are thought of as a World Series contender, but have not looked the part so far.

Jared Jones (RHP - PIT) is making his third start of the season after he was a tough-luck loser in a game the Pirates dropped to the Orioles, 5-2 last Friday night. Although he got hung with the “L,” Jones was not the reason for the defeat, as he did not look out of place at the Major League level going six innings and striking out six O’s hitters while walking no one. A pair of solo shots were all the damage the O’s could do and with that effort, Jones recorded a quality start while also generating an eye-popping 21-swinging strikes of the 80 pitches he threw. By the way, Baltimore enters tonight as the most disciplined team in all of baseball versus right-handed pitching, so that Jones made the O’s look so foolish is even more impressive than just those numbers on paper. Jones has pitched 11.2 innings thus far and he has a gorgeous 17:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. As an underdog against a Phillies offense that is totally limp, there is tremendous value to be had here on the Pirates.
