Detroit +116 over NY Mets

7:10 PM EST. April 3 and the Mets should be called the New York Mess. Of course it’s too early to write the Mets off but man, the weight on their shoulders today has to be feeling pretty heavy. The Mets are 0-4 and have scored eight lousy runs while the rest of the league is putting up crooked numbers already. Things do not get easier for the Metropolitans here against Casey Mize (RHP - DET).

Mize’s return from June 2022 Tommy John surgery was slowed by soreness and fatigue. 2023 ended up being a blank slate. However, this  former 2018 #1 pick will be 20 months off surgery when spring training begins. Pedigree, BB%/groundball% combo from rookie 2021 still speak to some upside. Of note during his third spring outing was not just that Mize’s velocity was up a tick from a 93.4 average in 2022, but that it proved he could reach back when he needed it. He hit 96 mph four times and 97 twice, both of the latter instances coming right when the situation called. He’s a fine dart throw if healthy.

Adrian Houser (RHP - NYM) went 8-5 with a 4.12/4.68 ERA/xERA split in 111 frames for the Brewers last year. He had a whirlwind season with multiple injuries and a brief demotion to the bullpen. K%, K-BB% suggest there was growth in his skills in the second half, though with no change in underlying indicators, those jumps were better explained simply as fortunate variance. Four consecutive 4.00+ xERA seasons point to continued mediocrity and therefore fade material when he’s the chalk.
