6:50 PM EST. Dane Dunning (RHP - TEX) had a strong spring training, where he was missing bats at an otherworldly rate with a swing-and-miss rate of 30%. While that is not a sustainable statistic over the long haul, it shows some promise that dude is coming into his own after adding a new pitch to his arsenal, although there is some debate about what to call it. Dunning referred to the "new pitch" in interviews during spring training and we’ll be watching to see just how much action his new "splitter" sees in his first turn of the season.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay will send Ryan Pepiot (RHP - TB) out for his first start of the season after he started 10 games with the Dodgers last season. On the surface, his numbers sparkle with a 2.14 ERA across 42 innings, but his xERA is a much more bloated 3.99. Not awful, but not spectacular. Further, Pepiot benefitted greatly from the Dodgers' defense behind him, as his Batting Average of Balls in Play (BABIP) was just .189 and his strand rate was 99.2%, which is also about as lucky as one can get. Pepiot's 2023 was smoke and mirrors, and he should not be favored over Dunning and the defending World Series champs.
