1:05 PM EST. The resurfacing of control issues, along with a lofty hr/f has caused Francisco Liriano’s (LHP) ERA to skyrocket. He’s now pitching under some intense pressure, as the Blue Jays losses continue to pile up. After being swept in a double-header on Thursday, Toronto lost the opener last night of this series after blowing another late lead. Mentally, the Jays are in a bad place and manager John Gibbons, can’t be feeling very secure either. That feeling of desperation causes a manager to make the wrong moves at the wrong time. In fact, there isn’t a right move because they’re all turning out poorly. The Jays are right back at it in this afternoon affair and they’re sending a struggling pitcher to the mound.

Matt Andriese (RHP) is someone we have targeted this season as a breakout candidate. Andriese posted a 5.53 ERA in the second half of last year so why are we so high on him? Because these are skills you should buy. Andriese was able to miss bats all season and he’s doing the same this year. He's long been stingy with the free pass. A superb first-pitch strike rate/ball% combination should lock in another strong year of control. He was snake bit by a trifecta of misfortune in the second half (hit%, strand%, hr/f but his overall skills and xERA paint a much more optimistic picture. The pieces are in place for a full-fledged breakout. Andriese was one of just seven starters (min. 100 IP) with a swing and miss/first-pitch strike rate combo both in the top-10 in the league but it was all hidden by some bad luck. Trust the skills—they point to a much better 2017 season and he’s in a great spot here to bewilder a bewildered offense.
