Montreal +123 over Toronto
7:00 PM. OT included. The Maple Leafs squeaked out a 4-3 overtime win against the Devils on Thursday, snapping a three-game losing streak, but there’s little to suggest they’ve turned a corner. Toronto looked flat for large stretches of that game and needed heroics from William Nylander to pull it out. Even Nylander’s two-goal performance doesn’t erase the fact he had just one goal in the prior 11 games. Toronto is also dealing with key absences, as captain John Tavares is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, leaving a gaping hole in the top six.
Furthermore, the Leafs’ blue line remains a liability, and Jake McCabe’s return from injury doesn’t move the needle much. Toronto has allowed 15 goals over its last four games, a troubling trend for a team priced as a heavy favorite on the road.
Contrast that with the Montreal Canadiens, who are playing their best hockey of the season. Winners of five of their last six games and riding an 11-2-1 stretch, the Habs are doing it with structure, commitment, and timely contributions from their young core. Lane Hutson has emerged as a rookie sensation, leading all first-year players in points with 36. His creativity and poise on the blue line have been a revelation, and his current six-game point streak is no fluke.
In net, rookie Jakub Dobes has been nothing short of sensational. Four starts, four wins, and a calmness well beyond his years. Dobes stopped 32 shots in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over Dallas, and with a team-first mentality instilled by head coach Martin St. Louis, Montreal is proving to be a tough out for anyone. The Habs under-the-radar resurgence has gone largely unnoticed, giving us a generous price to back a team playing far better hockey.
