Ottawa -106 over Washington

Canadian Tire Centre – Ottawa, ON

7:00 PM ET. OT included. The Capitals come into this matchup riding an eight-game point streak (5-0-3), and the market loves a streak. Washington has banked points and headlines during this run, but let’s peel back the layers. The Capitals' success is built on timely scoring, solid goaltending, and flashes of brilliance from their depth players like rookie Ethen Frank, who has been a revelation since his call-up. However, it’s worth noting that they’ve been far from dominant, often relying on Logan Thompson to bail them out when they falter.

Logan Thompson’s numbers (19-2-3 on the season) are undeniably strong, but there’s an asterisk here: he hasn’t faced a team firing on all cylinders like the Senators in weeks. Against Anaheim, Thompson faced just 19 shots, as Washington benefited from an early lead and a toothless Ducks offense. Ottawa, however, leads the NHL in shutouts and is coming off back-to-back blankings of the Islanders and Penguins.

The Senators are streaking themselves, with three straight wins fueled by a red-hot Leevi Merilainen in net. Merilainen has recorded two shutouts in his last three games, stopping 53 of the last 53 shots he’s faced. Ottawa has shown they can clamp down defensively and frustrate opponents, and they’ve been opportunistic on offense, getting contributions from all four lines.

Adam Gaudette snapped a 15-game goalless streak against the Islanders, and forwards like Shane Pinto, Drake Batherson, and Josh Norris have all extended point streaks to three games. The Senators’ depth scoring has come alive, which is critical against a Capitals team that relies heavily on their top performers. Alex Ovechkin has just one empty-net goal in his last five games, and Washington’s secondary scoring hasn’t been consistent enough to make up for it.

The market perception here heavily leans on Washington’s point streak and Logan Thompson’s record, but the Senators’ recent form and defensive prowess suggest otherwise. Ottawa is playing with confidence, backed by a goaltender who is currently outshining even the league’s elite.

Furthermore, the Capitals are traveling for the second game of a back-to-back after a taxing stretch, while Ottawa has been comfortably settled at home. The Senators have been streaky, but right now, they’re trending in the right direction, and the Capitals are ripe for a stumble.
