Pittsburgh over Carolina

6:07 PM ET. OT included. The Hurricanes come into this game as a significant favorite, but there’s little justification for that based on their current form. Carolina has dropped four of its last six games and looked utterly lifeless in Saturday’s 4-0 loss to Minnesota. Coach Rod Brind’Amour’s bench interview during the game said it all: “We’re so flat, we have no chance the way we’re going right now.” That kind of admission from a coach isn’t just rare — it’s telling.

The Hurricanes managed only 21 shots on goal against a middling Wild team and were barely competitive, especially early on, with just one shot in the first 12 minutes. Even when Carolina appeared to score, it was negated due to an offside challenge, further deflating an already struggling squad. This is a team currently lacking confidence, rhythm, and urgency. Now Carolina much play the second half of a back-to-back after a demoralizing home loss, and their confidence is clearly shaken.

Meanwhile, the Penguins are also in the midst of a rough patch, having lost four of six, but their performance Friday against Florida tells a different story. Pittsburgh battled to the very end, tying the game with just 40 seconds left in regulation on a 6-on-4 power play and forcing overtime. Their compete level is intact, and the effort they’re putting forth can’t be overlooked. Pittsburgh’s effort and grit give them every chance to pull off the upset here, and the price on the Penguins offers tremendous value.
