Pittsburgh is coming off a 4-2 loss to Detroit, a game where they dominated the puck at times but couldn’t finish their chances. What’s more, the Penguins' style matches up well against Florida. Florida’s 1-3 record on this five-game homestand is reflective of a team struggling to find its identity. After back-to-back 4-0 shutout losses to the Lightning and Canadiens, the Panthers mustered a brief offensive pulse against the Rangers, only to fall flat again in a 3-1 loss to the Hurricanes last night. Florida had no business being competitive in that game, outshot 39-23 and largely kept afloat by a Herculean effort from Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 36 of 38 shots.

While the narrative of a Stanley Cup champion rebounding from adversity is enticing, the reality of Florida’s form is far less glamorous. Over their past four games, the Panthers have scored just six goals, three of which came in garbage time against a Rangers team that had already mentally checked out. The Panthers are battling fatigue, frustration, and inconsistency, and they just might have one foot on the plane already.
