Montreal +140 over Detroit
7:07 PM ET. OT included. The Red Wings come into this game riding high after a 6-4 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday, a game in which they snapped multiple scoring droughts. Patrick Kane ended a 10-game goalless stretch, J.T. Compher scored for the first time in 22 games, and Joe Veleno tallied his second of the season. While it’s easy to see those performances as a sign of a potential turnaround, it’s more likely an aberration than a trend.
Let’s start with Detroit’s overall form. Despite winning three of their last four games, this is still a sub-.500 team that has struggled with consistency all season. Their 7-7-2 home record is as average as it gets, and their defensive lapses remain a major issue. Allowing four goals to a struggling Philadelphia team is hardly a ringing endorsement of their recent play. Detroit’s defense has been prone to lapses in coverage, and even a resurgent offense can’t mask the fact that they’ve given up 3+ goals in six of their last eight games.
Enter Les Canadiens, who are quietly trending upward. Fresh off a 6-1 dismantling of the Buffalo Sabres, the Habs have gone 4-3-0 in their last seven games and appear to be playing with renewed energy. Much of that can be attributed to the addition of Patrik Laine, who has been an absolute force since recovering from injury. Laine notched a hat trick—all on the power play—against Buffalo, giving him six goals in his last seven games. His chemistry with Cole Caufield has Laine already looking like a former #2 overall pick. This is a classic case of buying low the Habs, who are playing better than the market suggests while fading a very flawed favorite.
