New Jersey -1½ +145 over Detroit

7:07 PM EST. Regulation only. The Red Wings are off to a 3-3 record, but we are here to tell you that this is not a .500 hockey club, at least not in its current form. The Wings are coming off a 1-0 shutout win over the Islanders on Wednesday night, but the result is very misleading, as Detroit was outshot 31-to-11. Teams routinely rack up 11 shots in a period, not an entire game. The Wings have been very lucky this season considering their play, which, when looking at the goods under the hood, shows a team that ranks 31st out of 32 teams in puck possession, 31st in expected goals, and 31st in high-danger scoring chances. The point is, the Red Wings are a bottom feeder at the moment that is overperforming, and until they start playing good hockey, they are worthy of fade consideration.

The Devils, on the other hand, are coming off a game in which they gave up eight goals to the Lightning on Wednesday in an 8-5 loss. That was New Jersey’s second defeat in a row after dropping a 6-5 overtime decision to the Capitals last Saturday. The Devils are now 5-3-1, but they have gone just 1-2-1 over their last four games, which has their stock down a little. However, the Devils are capable of scoring goals in bunches, and the Dead Things just might be what the doctor ordered for New Jersey to get back to the winner’s circle. We are going for the kill here and will play the Devils on the puck line at a nice price rather than the half-puck or 3-way because we are going to need them to be up a goal late either way, and if they are, they are going to have a shot at an empty-netter.
