Sandwiched in between was a 6-4 loss to the Bruins, but the Habs were not outclassed, and from an analytics perspective, it may have been the best game they’ve played in the early going. Over their last two games, they’ve scored eight goals, and they’ve gotten great goaltending from Sam Montembeault, who has stopped all but one of the 73 shots he’s faced in two games versus the Senators and Maple Leafs, posting a save percentage of .986.

The Penguins are not worthy of being favored in this range on the road in their current form. Pittsburgh has played three games, going 1-2, but they were outclassed in losses to the Rangers and Leafs, while their win over the Red Wings was one that was aided by a number of bounces that went the Pens’ way. Hockey is the most luck-driven sport on the planet, and the best team on the ice is often the one that does not pick up the two points. The Penguins were outshot in all three of those games, with Toronto (32-23) and the Rangers (40-31) posting the largest margins in that department. This game is far closer to a 50/50 proposition than the odds suggest, which makes the Canadiens a play. Of course, they can win here on home ice.
