We backed the Blue Jackets in their 5-3 loss to the Penguins on Tuesday night, but we ripped up those tickets after Sidney Crosby of the Pens broke a 3-3 tie in the third period and then added an empty netter. There is no shame in losing a game to one of the greatest players of all time, and we see no reason not to come right back on the Jackets tonight, as their stock continues to plummet while also taking a step down in competition. The Jackets have lost six straight, and nine of their last 10.

The Coyotes have played three straight games on the road with trips to St. Louis, Nashville, and Dallas along the way. Arizona has alternated wins and losses in those games and, in fact, it has been alternating wins and losses for the last eight games, including their last contest in Dallas on Tuesday which was a 4-3 OT loss.

The Coyotes have been a live pooch on many nights this year and will probably continue to be but we're not convinced that they're worthy of being road chalk just yet. Both of these teams are very comparable when we look at the underlying numbers. When it comes to puck possession, we are talking about the 25th (Arizona) and 28th (Columbus) ranked teams in the NHL. High-danger scoring chances are comparable too, with the Coyotes ranking 22nd and the Jackets are 27th. The one area in the analytics where the ‘Yotes are vastly superior to the Blue Jackets is PDO, or “puck luck,” where Arizona ranks only second behind the Penguins in “getting the bounces.” The Blue Jackets are 22nd. The Jackets have been very close in a bunch of games lately, which inlcude a 4-3 OT loss at MSG against the Rangers, a 5-4 OT loss at Florida, a 5-4 loss to Detroit and that aforementioned loss to Pittsburgh among others. The Jackets on the verge opf snapping out of it and catch the Coyotes playing their fourth game of a five-game trip.
