Detroit +145 over N.Y. Islanders

7:37 PM EST. OT Included. The Red Wings have lost three straight, but Jack Hughes took over in New Jersey, a couple of late penalties made the difference versus Seattle, they outshot the Jets in a 4-1 loss in Winnipeg, and versus the Bruins on Saturday night (another 4-1 loss), the Wings were in that game until the very end. In fact, they were the better team in terms of puck possession numbers and high-danger scoring chances. The coaching staff took notice of the quality effort despite the lack of results, and there was an optional practice yesterday, as rest and recuperation were the priority for the players in advance of their fourth straight game against a playoff team from a year ago.

Enter the Islanders, who are coming off a shutout win over Columbus on Saturday night, their second win in a row after beating Ottawa last Thursday. In a results-based business, the wins are all that count, but they also inflate the value of weak teams, which is a label that is fair to place on the Isles, who rank just 24th in puck possession this season. The Islanders have been outplayed in nearly every game they have played this season, with the lone exception being their 1-0 season-opening win over Arizona, the only contest in which they were the dominant team. The Islanders are not superior to the Red Wings, but the market has not adjusted to that reality.
