St. Louis +170 over Vancouver
10:00 PM EST. OT included. The Blues are playing the tail end of a back-to-back, but after shutting out the Flames 3-0 last night in Calgary, we suspect that St. Louis cannot wait to get back on the ice. While this is a situational play against the Canucks, we do like much of the roster the Blues are icing, as they have a nice mix of veterans with Kevin Hayes, Pabel Buchnevich and Kasperi Kapanen, who has finally found a home in St. Louis (dude scored again last night in Calgary) and youth like Jordan Kyrou, who scored 37 goals last season. That said, this play has little to do with the Blues, as we are here to fade the surging Canucks.
The Canucks were an under-the-radar team before the season began, but a 4-2 start has Vancouver cracking the top 10 in today’s newly released ESPN NHL power rankings. With that increase in profile comes the attention of the market, which loves to back a winner. While the start is a positive one, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the Canucks have been a bit of a roller coaster ride, capable of dropping a real stinker. We cannot predict when and where that drop in performance might take place, but we’ll note the Canucks are coming off a five-game road trip and have been sitting idle at home in Vancouver for two days after beating Nashville 3-2 on Tuesday night. Is it out of line to suggest that the Canucks might be flat-footed when the puck drops on this one with the Rangers on deck tomorrow on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada? Even if they are not, the Canucks cannot be priced in a similar range against the Blues tonight as the Flames were last night. For some perspective, the Flames are fifth in the league in puck possession while the Canucks are 26th. Overlay.
