10:00 PM EST. Regulation only. Let’s see if we have this straight, shall we? The Devils, a cup contender, went out and picked up Timo Meier. Both in dimensions and magnitude, New Jersey's acquisition of Meier is a game-changer. He is a 26-year-old winger who has scored 66 goals in his past 134 NHL games with the Sharks, with 128 points in those games. In Meier, the Devils have an elite, play-driving winger who creates scoring chances and finishes them with frequency. They added an established offensive force to a team that was already fifth in the NHL in goals per game. Every player in that Devils’ locker room is jacked up knowing the front office was dead serious about winning a championship this year. The Devils have swag.
Meanwhile, the Golden Knights picked up Jonathan Quick, a washed up goaltender that has been around for 16 years and that isn’t even worthy of being a backup for a junior team. Quick might be the worst goaltender in the game but that’s not really the point. The point is, the players in Vegas’ locker room have to be thinking, “WTF”?
We love that Vegas is coming off a win over Carolina. It looks good on paper but just know that Vegas fired away 20 shots on net the entire game and had few scoring chances. Prior to that lucky win v Carolina, Vegas lost three of four, which included a loss to Chicago and an OT loss to Dallas. The Golden Knights also failed to score on Colorado two games ago in a 3-0 loss.
The Devils just buried seven goals on Colorado and are coming off back-to-back seven goal outbursts. We’re always mindful of not buying high on teams but we’re not buying high here. The Devils stock is about to shoot through the roof so there is still time to get in before it does. This is truly a juggernaut of a team that cannot wait to get right back out there. When the pucks are going in, you want to play. Vegas cannot compete with the Devils and will therefore have to get very lucky again.
