Buffalo +246 over Boston
7:00 PM EST. OT included. The Sabres are coming off an untimely home loss v Columbus in a game they needed to win in their quest to make the playoffs. Buffalo is three points back of Pittsburgh for the final playoff spot with one game in hand and they are four points back of the Islanders with five games in hand. Indeed, Buffalo is right in the thick of it but could not handle the weight of expectations last game when they lost to Columbus. The Sabres now get a role reversal in that they go from a -200 favorite at home and expected to win to a massive underdog on the road with no chance to win (says the price). Well, believe it or not, Boston is not infallible and the Sabres are the most dangerous underdog in the league at prices like this. This is not Arizona, San Jose or the Ducks. Buffalo is a not bad at all 6-10 against top-10 opposition, which is one less victory than both Carolina and Tampa.
Of course Boston is elite, but they are not 47-8-5 elite like its record suggests. The Bruins are very good and extremely lucky, which is a combination that has propelled to its misleading record. Boston is no better than the other top teams in the league like Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina, the Rangers or New Jersey but they are a whole lot luckier. Boston’s off-the-charts winning percentage is very simply unsustainable so we’ll take a swing at them here.
The Bruins are not in a favorable spot here. They return home from a four-game, Western trip through Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. The Bruins went 0-4 but could have easily gone 1-3 if not for their extreme good fortune. They beat Seattle 6-5 with two late goals in the third after being down 5-4 with under four minutes remaining. Seattle outshot Boston 41-33. They then beat the Canucks on Saturday night. Big deal. Then it was onto Edmonton where the B’s would once again get lucky in a 3-2 victory in a game they were only able to fire away 28 shots on net. Finally, Boston would finish up its road trip with a 4-3 OT victory in Calgary in one of this year’s most misleading scores. Calgary outshot Boston 57-20 (!) and should have lost 10-0 instead of winning 4-3. That’s hockey and that’s the story of this year’s Bruins. Rarely dominant, Boston is priced these days like they’re unbeatable. This Boston team doesn’t come close to being unbeatable and anytime we can get a quality pooch like the Sabres at this price, you can pencil us in.
