Edmonton +100 over Toronto

8:07 PM EST. All eyes in Canada will be on this glorious matchup the day after the Maple Leafs made more moves to solidify their “all-in” position. Toronto acquired a 2023 first-round draft choice (previously belonging to Boston) and defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Washington for defenseman Rasmus Sandin. Toronto acquired a 2024 third-round draft choice from the New York Islanders for forward Pierre Engvall and also acquired defenseman Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2023 third-round choice. The Leafs are in win-now mode. Toronto sent first-round draft choices to St. Louis for Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari and to Chicago for Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty. It's clear from what GM Kyle Dubas did on Tuesday and prior that he's prioritizing players with experience. Toronto has been tripped up by its youth during past playoff runs. Dubas appears to be guarding against that now by loading up on league veterans. The pressure to win is going to be immense come playoff time but today, the Maple Leafs are favored in Edmonton before the “new look” gets acclimated. It’s not like Toronto is playing St. Louis.

Edmonton also made a move but only need one player to get acclimated and it’s a move that will be welcomed with open arms. Scoring has not been the issue with the Oilers. Doing what they can to prevent giving up goals at a high rate is why the Oilers had to make a move. Having Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid power your attack is why the Oilers lead the NHL with 3.80 goals per game. No single player can answer all of a team's defensive challenges but Mattias Ekholm Ekholm should be able to significantly help the Oilers address a season-long problem.

What the market sees is an Edmonton team that has lost two in a row and six of eight. What we see is a very unlucky team that has lost a mere three games in regulation over its past 19 games and has lost just once by more than one goal over that same span. That’s how good and unlucky the Oil have been over the past 19 games. This is an elite team that is a pooch at home. That’s incorrect.
