First and foremost, this is a combined effort of “sticking with it,” as we bet the Jets yesterday and fading the Rangers in what looks to be a favorable situational play after they return home from a four-game road trip that saw them play that brutal Western Canadian stretch through Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary. The Rags would go 3-1 on that trip that began with a 6-2 win in Carolina, only losing to the Flames in overtime on Saturday night. New York has points in 10 straight games, while also going 8-0-2 during that stretch. Their stock is through the roof. However, we’ll note the Rangers were outshot badly by the Flames (32-to-20) and the Hurricanes (29-19). It’s not unfair to suggest that the Rangers were the beneficiaries of the bounces and the better goaltending on both of those nights. Both of those facts are luck-based, which points again to the NHL being the most volatile sport when it comes to “in-game variance.”

It’s not easy to come back to Winnipeg today, but that is what happens when you watch games. It can poison you. That is why we always preach about how important it is to not “zig-zag” on a team when you get burned on a wager. Winnipeg was up 2-1 going into the third period in New Jersey, but they could not hang on, giving up two goals in less than two minutes before the Devils would pad the score with an empty netter. Disappointing, yes, but the prudent play here is to tough it out with Winnipeg once again. The Jets’ stock is down after losing yesterday and to the Blue Jackets before heading out to the East Coast, but one could argue that Winnipeg deserved a better fate against the Blue Jackets, as they outshot them by double digits (38-to-23). The Jets also outshot the Kraken on Valentine's day 40-to-29.

Situationally speaking, this is an odd one-off for the Rangers, as they’ll be back on the road for a game in Detroit on Thursday before heading to Washington on Saturday afternoon, where they will play in the feature game on ABC. Is it out of line to suggest the Jets just might be an afterthought? Regardless, the price and the situation dictate the play.
