Calgary -½ +135 over Winnipeg

8:07 PM EST. Regulation only. The Jets rang in the New Year with a 2-1 win in Edmonton, but that victory is one that we would call “fortunate” at best. In that game, Winnipeg was outshot 32-17, was forced to kill off five penalties, and the Jets somehow shut down Connor McDavid. McDavid’s run of points ended that night at 17 games and it was all thanks to one man—the other Connor…Hellebuyck.

As we’ve written many times before, if we could predict who the hotter goaltender was going to be, we’d have a handful of winners every day. Unfortunately, those performances cannot be predicted. Nor can the number of power plays that will be awarded to either side, and whether or not they’ll be capitalized on. We also cannot predict which version of the Jets are going to show up on any given night. The team that the Oilers skated circles around or the ones who piled on the Canucks the game prior. Goaltending aside, Winnipeg is the second best team here.

You can pretty well pencil in the Flames to be the better team on the ice more often than not. The problem with Calgary, like it is with many teams, is that they do not have a goalie you can trust. Jacob Markström should be the prototype for today’s netminder. He’s a giant—6' 6" and takes up a ton of space with all of his 200+ pounds. However, dude is great one night and terrible the next. Regardless, we are only interested in riding the wave of a hot team that is underpriced here on the road.
