Ottawa -½ +125 over Vancouver

7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. The Canucks are either scoring five goals in a win or allowing five goals or more in a loss. This is a team that is talented, unpredictable and erratic. They may be a bit fragile too after blowing a bunch of leads already this year but this wager has little to do with fading the Canucks. No, this wager has everything to do with getting behind the Sens at a bargain basement price.

After Ottawa’s 2-1 loss to the Flyers on Saturday night, its fifth loss in a row, Hockey Night in Canada analyst Kelly Hrudey said, ”Ottawa is good but they haven’t learned how to execute to win yet”. We’re not kidding. Dude actually said that. If I was on the panel I would have responded, “Really”? They just won four in a row before so what, they learned how to execute and win and then forgot?”.

When the season started, it was Vancouver that couldn’t buy a win. Then it was the media losing their shit over the Maple Leafs losing four in a row. Then it was Ottawa and still is, and now both Edmonton and Calgary are being questioned. The media and market’s fascination with wins above everything else continues. Ottawa is playing damn good hockey but has been on the wrong side of nothing but pure poor luck.

Ottawa’s five losses were to Minnesota, Florida, Tampa, Vegas and Philadelphia. Four of those five teams are among the elite while Philly has the hottest goaltender in the NHL. Incidentally, Ottawa badly outplayed the Flyers but lost. Against Florida, it was 3-3 with four minutes remaining. The Sens' last three losses to TB, Vegas and Philly were all by one goal. Prior to those five losses, Ottawa won four in a row, thus we could seriously be discussing a team on a nine-game winning streak as opposed to a five-game losing streak and then the Sens would be -180 here and not -120. Wins and losses influence the price way more than the performance on the ice and we’ll therefore attempt to take advantage of an underpriced team at home. Hopefully, the Sens relearned “how to execute to win”. Incredible that Hrudey actually believes that codswallop.
